About Us
Hairs To You has been in business on the Main Line
since 1985. Starting out as a one person salon on the side of the
original owner's house, within a few years it had grown so much that it
warranted a move to a building all its own in Wynnewood, PA. After
spending 23 years as the owner of Hairs To You, the original owner, Rita
decided to pass the torch and sell the business to one of her
employees, Paige and her husband, Steve.
It wasn't an easy decision, but
Paige and Steve decided to move locations to Montgomery Ave in Bala Cynwyd in order to make the "best
kept secret on the main line" more visible and accessible to our
current clients, as well as attracting new clients.
With hard work and dedication, we continue to grow still to this
day, with word of mouth and our wonderful reputation being our primary
source of new clients. Our clients enjoy our family friendly atmosphere,
as well as the fact that all our stylists are truly friends. One
doesn't find the drama and bickering that goes on in some salons here!
Everyone at Hairs To You is either family, or adopted in as family!
At Hairs To You we pride ourselves on keeping up
with the latest trends and techniques, and we constantly pursue further
education and annually attend hair shows in order to better serve our
clients. We consider it our top priority to not only send our
clients out the door feeling 100% satisfied with our service, but to
educate each client on how to reproduce his or her unique look at home.
At Hairs To You, we believe that sometimes a change
in style, or stylist, can be refreshing. Please don't feel that you are
offending anyone by trying a new stylist or service, because we truly
believe in working as a team!
A Sit-Down Interview with Paige Lewis, owner of Hairs To You and Rita Stowell, creator and original owner of Hairs To You
Q: Paige, talk to me about the journey that led you to hair and specifically, to Hairs To You.
PL: I grew up in the south, and I always had longish hair and was known at school as the girl who did her hair in different ways, like updos and things. Even when I played with Barbies, I just wanted to style their hair, and then I was done with them. I'd lose interest after that! I toyed with the idea of fashion design, before deciding on cosmetology. After graduating from Griffin Technical College in Georgia, I worked at a couple of salons in that area before meeting my husband and making the joint decision to move north, to Pennsylvania.
Q: Is that when you met Rita?
PL: Yes, I met Rita soon after that and we just really "clicked". We joke all the time that she thinks that I am her, that we are the same person. We're very similar, and hit it off right away. We finish each other's sentences. It wasn't long after I started working for Rita that she suggested I buy the salon from her, an opportunity that was really a dream come true.
Q: How did you know this salon was where you wanted to invest yourself, career-wise? PL: More than anything, the atmosphere here is really why any of that ever came about. I loved working here. When you wake up in the morning and you're excited to go to work, you don't ever want to give that up. So eventually things worked out and fell into place, and I was able to buy the salon from her. In the meantime, though, I did gain a lot of experience, and I started to take over a lot of things around here even before I bought it.
Q: Rita, having started this salon so many years ago, in your home no less...how did you know that Paige was the person you could entrust to take care of your "baby"? RS: Paige was really... like me. If something was needed here or there, she'd jump in and take care of it, where most others might just do their own job and not try to fill in.
PL: Yes, so by the time I took over the business, the only things I wasn't doing were the payroll and the bills. The biggest blessing is that Rita is still here, and all my questions are easily handled. In fact, she's still here and she's like a Mama bear, who I can turn to for help in handling anything that comes up.
RS: And the biggest blessing is that I'm still in my environment, and it all still works. This is what I love to do, and I didn't want to just sell the business and walk away. The transition wasn't weird because she had already been here two years. In fact, we have some clients that still don't know it has changed hands. There is a male client that I have that was saying "I don't think it's going to work, I don't think you're going to be able to keep your mouth shut, I think you're going to get on Paige's nerves, I don't think you're going to be able to mind your own business!"
PL: So now I can say "I'm going to tell Jeff on you!"
Q: You guys are so funny. It really seems special here, like it's a true family environment. RS: This salon is extremely family oriented. Actually, I am the cousin of Patty's husband. Patty's husband is Lisa's cousin on the other side. And Lisa and Patty grew up together and were girlfriends in school.
PL: But even our clients eventually become like family. It's easy to feel that, here.
Q: What Rita said earlier about having seen clients as little girls, and then years later doing their hair for their wedding, and those same clients bringing their own kids in for haircuts really illustrates that. RS: In fact, we're so team-and-family oriented here, that if you need your hair cut, and your regular stylist isn't available, it's perfectly fine to go to another stylist here. It's just not an issue.
Hairs to You is a special salon; a true family oriented environment offering quality services for the entire family.
